New years resolutions often run out of steam… Here are 3 Simple and more manageable ideas for 2024
You may be thinking that some new year resolutions will help kick you off to a good start in the new year, but like a lot of these things they often leave you feeling deprived and end up setting you up for failure.
It’s good to look at making a fresh start and changing a few old habits so why not make these changes a bit more achievable? Just a simple, positive action can make an enormous difference and make you feel better….
1) Get outside every day.
Getting enough natural light during the day will help improve your sleep/wake cycles especially if you start the day with a walk in nature at sunrise. Studies have also shown that being in nature has a positive effect on our bodies by reducing cortisol levels, muscle tension, and demands on our cardiovascular systems (lowers heart rate and blood pressure). Being out in nature often may lead to lower rates of heart disease. The great outdoors can also help you increase your vitamin D level, which is important for your bones, blood cells, and immune system.
Nature can help decrease your anxiety levels and can help lessen stress and feelings of anger.
Regular access to green spaces has been linked to lower risks of depression and improved concentration and attention. Being outside allows us to be social and come together with family, friends, or even people you don’t know.
2) Exercise to feel good, not to lose weight.
Instead of obsessing over the bathroom scales, obsess over how amazing you feel since you started being more active. Numbers don’t mean much.
Exercise and physical activity can be fun and social. They give you a chance to unwind, enjoy the outdoors or simply do activities that make you happy. Physical activity also can help you connect with family or friends in a fun social setting.
So take a dance class, hit the hiking trails or join a tennis club. Find a physical activity you enjoy, and just do it. Bored? Try something new, or do something with friends or family.
3) Support your rest.
Stop feeling guilty about doing nothing!
It’s so important to give yourself time out and give your body and mind a chance to re-set itself. It boosts creativity, reboots your brain and reduces stress. If you’re feeling fidgety and struggle with the idea of giving yourself permission to rest, book a massage appointment. Receiving a massage gives you a chance to tune in to yourself.
